Once in a while a play comes along that touches you so deeply, that you cannot stop thinking about the story. This is true of Terrence McNally’s Mothers and Sons.  This new play written by Mr. McNally, debuts on Bucks County Playhouse’s stage. The show tells the story of a mother, Katharine Gerard, who lost her son to AIDS. Katharine goes to New York City to return her son’s journal to her son’s partner, Cal Porter, and finds he has moved on with his life. The show is one that will make you think as well as encourage a dialogue about the show. Mothers and Sons is a stellar production and should not be missed.

Not only is Mothers and Sons written by one of America’s greatest living playwrights, but it also has an outstanding cast and director.Sheryl Kaller directs this production, and the cast includes Tyne Daly and Manoel Felciano. Tyne Daly plays Katharine Gerard; this character is indifferent and lonely, and still trying to come to terms with the death of her son. Ms. Daly is exceptional in this part. Throughout the show, she depicts her character’s evolvement, and the audience can see little by little her character’s attitude change. Manoel Felciano portrays Cal Porter. Cal is a complex character who is still discovering who he is. Feliciano is superlative in this role. Feliciano effectively illustrates Cal’s anger towards Katharine, as well as his love towards his husband, Will Ogden, and their child, Bud. Bobby Steggert plays Will. Will is a man who is non-apologetic for who he is. He is a strong character; and is thrilled he is able to be married to another man, and have a son. Steggert is a magnificent actor, and successfully illuminates the emotions Cal feels throughout the play. To round out this brilliant cast is Grayson Taylor who plays Bud Ogden-Porter. Taylor is an enthusiastic young actor, who demonstrates Bud’s passion and inquisitiveness excellently throughout the play.

Mothers and Sons is at the Bucks County Playhouse until June 23, 2013. Do not miss the opportunity to see this brilliant play with an all-star cast. For tickets and more information call the box office at (215) 862-2121 or online at www.bcptheater.org.

I've been looking forward to learning more about this play ever since I heard Tyne Dally was going to be its lead. Based on this review alone I will definitely be checking it out!
